I have a narrow strip of garden along my house where I planted beets last year. I pulled them all up last year by the end of the year since I wasn't going to overwinter them. A few weeks ago I planted carrots in the same bed. When I went to check if I had carrot sprouts I noticed little green leaves with dark red stems breaking through the earth. Would these be returning beet sprouts? Can carrots and beets get along? I've heard that you can plant carrots and radishes together, but I don't know about beets. If the beets are already sprouting will it be likely that I'd harvest those before the carrots? If the beets will crowd out the carrots, then should I pluck out the beet sprouts to make room? It would be great to have both, but only if one won't compromise the growth of the other.

Lauren: We routinely grow them side by side with no problems. I haven't tried mixing them in the row, but I wouldn't think they would care, other than perhaps crowding. I'd let them be, and only pull what is actually crowding later.

Same here, I normally grow my beets and carrots together. This year, I'm going to interplant allium on the hope that it will repel pests for both of them. We shall see. I find when a pest is hungry...
I can economize on floating row cover I guess.
