Has anybody else here heard of this Menonite/Amish heirloom. It is grown here by the amish community and has been available locally for 60 years. I don't know if this is a local strain or if it is widespread so I am asking if anyone else has grown it or if this i something special that you guys would be interested in this fall. I bought 16 plants and will grow it for seed if needed. -Alan

I have never heard of that one before. The Amish were good at breeding different tomatoes from the same parent. It would be interesting to know if this tomato and Brandtwine were both offshoots of the BIG RED tomato.

Alan, if it's been available locally for 60 years in the Amish community then I'd think it would qualify as an Indiana heirloom?? What's the tomato like? beefsteak style or more like a 4 oz canner?? If you can provide more info then perhaps you will find a market for it here.. And why not save some seed? If you sell lots of them from the plants you purchased, then I would say it would be a good one to grow for next year. Besides, we all know that commercial markets change and something new will come along. When that happens you will still have a piece of the past in your own seed collection.

It's a large, Regular Leaf, red, mishapen beefsteak from 1.5-2 lbs. It almost always wins the size category at our county fair. I just wasn't sure if it was something that existed outside of my little rual community. I'll be saving seeds anyhow and offering them here. -Alan
