Just thought I'd show you my new selections from the 'Crimson flowered broad bean' as I haven't posted for a while. I grew the parent variety last year and among the expected crimson beans I had two pinks and one purple. I have a thing for purple in my veg so I isolated the purple plant and saved the seed in the hope of developing a new purple broad. Much to my surprise all the seedlings from this plant are purple, there is some slight variation in the shade of two individuals but very little. I'd expected quite a lot of variety in flower colour but cant say I'm sorry it didn't show up. I've isolated three plants of the colour shown above for pure seed production and plan to cross the remaining plants with purple seeded varieties to try and develop a purple seeded purple flowered fava. I'll be interested to see if next seasons seedlings from the pure line are as uniform in colour as this years; I think there's a fair chance they will be but time will tell. I'm also looking forward to seeing what comes from the cross to the purple seeded varieties. Never thought I'd get so excited about a vegetable I don't really like the taste of. The link below is to Rebsie's review of the 'Crimson flowered broad bean' for comparison. www.daughterofthesoil.com/crimsonflowered.html

I have about 100 OP seed from this selection available if anyone's interested in some.
It's a mixed bag in terms of size and colour, and may be crossed with any number of other varieties being grown by the other plot holders at the allotment. So I cant guarantee the flowers will be the same colour as the one in photograph but it should be interesting to see what comes out and the beans will be perfectly edible.
I'll split the seed between those interested and will work on a first come basis if demand is high. Just leave a post here if you'd like some and message me your address.
All the best,
Graham.

I might be interested in some. What would one need to know of the soil requirements before knowing weather or not this could successfully grow? Fava have never been grown here before. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen them growing. I would want to be able to use them for falafel mostly. I LOVE falafel and though I've heard it's most properly made with raw fava and garbanzos, I've never had it but from powder or from canned beans.

No problem grungy, pm received.
mnjrutherford, I cant say with certainty that favas will grow successfully for you, but they are grown in a wide range of climates and soil types around the world. I can't say I've found them to be that fussy a plant. They are more of a cool season vegetable and are quite hardy if that helps, but it may be a case of trying your luck with them.
Your more than welcome to some seed.

Sorry to anyone else that would like these seed, but Penny just got the last of them. If I get a good crop next season I'll offer some more.
Should be interesting to see if this colour holds true next year.
