Well it's that time of year again for the dreaded black fly. Makes me want to stay indoors. lol Seems a cruel trick of nature, forcing us to suffer 6 months of winter, and as soon as it begins to get warm, an army of black flies zoom all around wanting blood. However I got smart and transplanted some seedlings outside at 530 AM and only saw one or two flies.

GRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr They are such horrid little things! That's another thing I won't miss about living in Eastern Ontario. We don't have them down here. I hope Global Warming doesn't change that, lol
They have a similar critter in the Deep South. We had the dubious pleasure of comparing the two types when we managed a vacation in Mississippi 6 years ago.

lol I remember right after we just moved here and did not have a garden started. So we decided to drive down the road a bit and pick wild strawberries.
You couldn't be out there more than a few minutes before the flies swarmed. So we would race back to the car waving our arms the whole way and drive to the next spot. Over and over again until we filled our little cups with wild berries.
It was worth it for those berries.
Yesterday they somehow got under my long sleeve hooded jacked and tshirt and bit me in the armpit.

It's okay. When you scratch your pit in public, the locals will think you're one of them, lol Skin So Soft was the only thing I found that worked for Black Flies that wasn't horribly offensive smelling. I used it on the horses and around my dog's ears and eyes. Otherwise they got bit and their ears would swell up. TKO Orange (a Canadian company from out west) made a good repellant as well, but I haven't seen it anywhere for a while? Not sure if they are still in business?

Ah, the hinterlands of Canada- the land of the flies. In summer, it's black flies, horse flies, deer flies, house flies and in the winter the snow flies. LOL
