After three years, I dug up an annoying self seeding (though native) perennial suflower and my salsify Tragopogon porrifolius bloomed: On time, my scozonera Scorzonera hispanica (I thank Patrick from the blog Bifucated Carrot for these seeds) blooms second year: The whole plant (I believe) is edible www.pfaf.org/database/plants.php?Tragopogon+porrifolius. Added bonus, scorzonera is supposed to be perennial!

Get ready for those seeds! The seed head is like a dandelion, and the seeds can easily blow away in the wind.

Yes, I've seen the seed heads before. They are spectacular. Does anyone want me to save them some of either variety?

Well, there is some weed around that looks like the yellow. I sure didn't know that is what is was. Guess I didn't need to have bought those seeds, I didn't get them sown anyway. I do like the color of the hispanica. Can anyone comment of the taste? How about self seeding vigor?

I can comment on taste but not self seeding as this is my first year with bloom for either. The taste of the roots is better after frost and the scorzonera has a strong, salty flavour in my opinion. The leaves of scorzonera in the spring are good mixed in salad though I wouldn't use them as a base as they are a bit too fiborous. Haven't tried the flowerheads yet. As for that weed, I believe you are talking about Goat's Beard (also edible) or Tragopogon dubius. www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/tragopogondubi.html That latin name cracks me up! The root of it that I tasted was quite sweet raw.

I thank you for that link. I guess I will go dig some up and taste it. I don't have it on my property (yet), but it is growing across the road on my FIL's farm. I don't remember seeing this around here until about the last 10 years or so, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Only scorzonera is perennial but both are supposed to self seed. My salsify has been going strong for 3(4?) years now but that's because it hadn't flowered before. A pattern of biennial plants, I notice. They can live 3 or 4 years but die after flowering.
