This was the information which Randel at Baker Creek posted yestarday afternoon
Merlyn Niedens passed away
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have just received the very distressing news of the passing of Merlyn Niedens. He was passionately dedicated to preserving heirloom varieties, and grew seeds for Baker Creek, Southern Exposure Seeds, and other companies as well, I believe. It's safe to say that if you've been a customer of BC or SESE for any length of time, you've probably planted seeds grown by Merlyn.
Merlyn networked and collected tirelessly, striving to rescue rare heirlooms from around the eastern United States.
He also originated quite a few excellent varieties of his own, out of heirloom stock and to his own very high standards. Melon Green Machine and Golden Jenny, Tomato Tappy's Heritage and Tappy's Finest, Sunflower Short Stuff were a few of his introductions.
Merlyn was a mentor and very good friend both to myself and to Jere. He shared his time and knowledge unstintingly, and he will be greatly missed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I met Merlyn at a conference in Berea Ky. (Bill Best's place) several years ago. He was a great and kind man, always willing to share his information and expierences with growing and seed saving. He will be greatly missed.

With deepest sympathy. Sounds like the world is poorer now, for the loss of a great gardener and preserver.

While it is sad for those who loved him, it must be comforting to think about how his work touched so many people.
