I have now learned there are different kind of leaves on tomato plants. There are also different colors of tomatoes. Are there flavor and/or texture characteristics that are common the various colors?

Mike, There are some that would say yes, I am not so sure that it makes a lot of sense to say that pigment of leaf shape makes a flavor distinct. Else, why wouldn't a red tomato taste like a red strawberry? But, I do have to say, that I have yet to have a yellow or white tomato that I enjoyed. I have seemingly preferred reds and pinks, then blacks, then greens. I have not tasted all the varieties out there though, so, maybe there is a white or yellow I will like.

It's been shown in blind taste tests that color and taste are not particularly entwined.
We all have biases, however. For instance, although I know better intellectually, you'll never convince me that yellows aren't all too sweet, or that pinks lack that complex flavor I look for in a tomato.

I think people expect flavors based on color, and can convince themselves that's what they tasted. (I can't shake the idea that each yellow tomato has real citrus taste to it, for example.) As to pink tomatoes, they remind me visually of those anemic supermarket tomatoes, so I get the same reaction Brook does - I assume it won't be full flavored. Ask Flowerpower - I think she's the one who won't eat the "weird" colored ones!
By the way - did you see the pic of the black unknown tomato on Tomatoland? Now that's a tomato I'd like to try!

Oh yeah!!! I LOVE black tomatoes and that is one great looking fruit.
I haven't yet convinced myself to try White maters. Perhaps next year. But I've got stripes and oranges and yellows and greens this year.. Forgot to plant my Cherokee Purples, DUH.. Better be something good in all the ones I've got or I'll be mighty disappointed.

LG, I think that is a Japanese Black Trifele, it is reputed to be amongst the best tasting tomatoes around. I am not absolutely sure of that I.D. as the shape is a tad more around than I have seen, but, the color and general shape match pretty well. We shall see as I am growing one this year to see how it does.

LG is right, I am picky about the color. I had no luck with my black cherry seeds. Stupid mouse found the plants tasty. I was trying those only because I think they look purple and not Black. No way would I eat a white tomato. I did get green zebra as a free gift and a friend asked me to start a few. I started 3 & gave her one. So I am going to grow it, though there is no guarantee I will taste it.
Last yr, I planted some seeds from wintersown.org 's Mixed Heirloom Maters. There was a red globe, a lg yellow/orange BS and another that I thought had a disease. The top looked all brown like it was rotting. I yanked the plant. After looking at many pics, I think it was Carbon or a similar variety. OOPS! LOL I would have fed them to the pigs anyway.
