Just a brief review of my trial of Big Ben.
The peas were started back in March and I got 100% germination from the few seeds I had.
They grew really well and were planted out at the end of April.
They came into flower and started to form peas in May.
The flower was larger than any of the other varieties that I have grown and is white. This variety certainly requires support as it grows to over six foot tall and has strong growth. The leafs are also larger and have a green mottling pattern through them.
The pods are large and contain eight to ten peas which are large and taste devine. Mine didn't make it to the kitchen so I can't tell you how they taste cooked! Eaten straight from the plant they taste like marrow fat peas and have a meaty taste to them.
This variety produced lovely tasty peas and you have to pick regularly as the pods don't take long to develop and are quite prolific. I would certainly grow this variety again and will collect the seed which is drying on the plant.
I have some pictures which I will post at a later date as I am still learning how to do this.
