American Gardener talked me into coming over here and checking this place out recently. I liked what I saw...a lot...and decided it was a good place to hang out.
Let's see. I'll be 44 later this year. Been married a long time. Still got the original model, too...lol. We've got two grown daughters - one is married, a mother of two in her own right (so we've got grandkids - totally bizarre, but wonderful), the other a college student planning on an advanced degree in one or another obscure geological field - and a grown son, who is a high-functioning autistic (Asperger's Syndrome), and still lives at home with us. I was a combat medic and NCO in the Army for nine years, and had a couple of trips to Iraq. Worked for Bridgestone-Firestone for about eight years, doing the corporate thing with sales/management. Other stuff, too...a Schwan's route driver, security at raves, motocross and nightclubs, a brief stint doing QA/QC. Now I'm working at the Portland, Oregon VA Medical Center, up in ICU. We are living on the other side of the Columbia River, in Woodland, Washington.
My hobbies are what I intend for my job to become, one of these days, so I am working at getting better at them. Gardening really brings me satisfaction. I've always liked working with my hands and it calms my spirit - I don't recommend time in a war zone, way overrated. I'm toying with eventually starting my own business or non-profit, as a result - details are still a little fuzzy...LOL. For now, I am trying to create my own collection of Central Asian/Middle Eastern/North African seeds/plants. I enjoy cooking -stuff from all over the world. I've been entering a few contests, testing the waters, and I've made it to the semi-finals (the stage right before getting on TV and winning some money) of the Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Showdown. I also enjoy martial arts (mostly of the SE Asian and internal Chinese persuasion) and writing. I'll be trying to get a book together here shortly, and see if I can find a publisher. Read all kinds of books, from nonfiction (my wife calls my taste in nonfiction "mummy-dust books") to fantasy. Music tastes run broad and global-from current stuff our kids like to Latin and African-influenced CD's, blues to classical.
So...between family and friends, work and hobbies, things are pretty busy around my house. We feel like we are finally starting to live, having left most of the family drama and angst of youth behind now. I'm looking forward to making friends here and trading info and seeds, and think its going to be great.
