My sister-in-law and brother got a bushel of "Turkey Craw" pole/snap beans from a neighbor up in northeastern Tennessee and are really raving about them. I found the story on them and a couple of places that say they sell the seeds. I also may have a lead on trading for some. One site wanted $7 for one pack, and the other had a limit of one packet. I'm cheap and will trade for them if I can.
So, I guess I'm going to find some one way or another. Anybody here grown them and, if so, how did they compare to others.

I grew them a couple of years ago. I bought them from Clemson Univ. in SC. They have a great bean taste, but they are not near as good as the Cutshort Greasy beans that I got from the same place.

How many do you need and when? If you can't wait until the 2009 crop is harvested and dried, there's still lots left from 2008.

Martin, would it be possible to obtain say 50 or so seeds after the harvest?

Looks like I'll be sharing with both of you. Planted 32 seeds on a 4-legged tepee and I think that it was 100% germination. I like to figure at least 120-1 return which should give me plenty to share at minimum 3,840.

Let me echo what Val is saying. I have posted a trade list over at GW and will keep it updated as the harvesting goes along. Martin, I invite you to shop that list for anything that catches your interest.

Turkey Craw beans harvested, dried, and ready for distribution to whomever would want some. Message me with a mailing address and I can easily send 50. My expense will be $1.22 postage and .28 bubble envelope. If I get something back in return, fine. If not, fine.

I'd like about 10 beans please. Are these best used as snaps or dried for soups and such? Val, do you still have the chestnut flavored beans? I forgot about them till just now.
Martin, I have a list of seeds I have available in the "Hip-Gnosis, Available Seed" section. 3 types of basil, 6 tomatoes and a blend, a mix of peppers, De Bourne cukes, Moon & Stars melons, and a few chia seed. I'm hoping to get more of the chia, but at the moment I have maybe a teaspoon total. I really want to get them spread out because they are a very nutritionally valuable food item.

Martin, is there something that we can send you in return, or should I pop an envelope in the mail with postage money enclosed. We should be getting our list somewhat beat into shape by the end of the month.
Cheers, Val / grungy

Turkey Craw is officially listed as a snap bean but short pods. Decent as a snap bean when young but quickly toughens up. I think that it's best as a dry bean.
Definitely don't need something else to grow but open to other uncommon beans, bush or pole. Otherwise just follow my instructions and inform me where to send them. If you have to be in debt to me the rest of your life, I can live with that! I don't insist on anyone paying me on my annual seed offer but manage to at least break even in the end.

Thanks Martin! I'll send you some of the seed from this unknown bean I have growing. We talked about it in a previous thread and you suggest it might be p. coccinus I think?
I'll PM my address on Saturday. Sure do appreciate it!
