At the meeting I went to today one of the topics was a new problem with black walnut trees. Problem is in New Mexico and other southwestern areas, hasn't made its way east to Indiana yet. An insect bores into the trees and spreads a fungus which is killing the trees. Apparently other species in the genus are more resistant, but they expect black walnuts to go the way of the American chestnut. Just a heads up.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Man, this sucks!
Reason to keep hybridizing and tinkering to stay ahead of these disasters. I am hankering one day for a nut orchard and hope it produces nuts...
