just wanted to say hi, and introduce myself a little.
im in utah, zone 5. weather outside is slightly chilly, but no snow at the moment.
i got into gardening last year, after i first saw seeds for burpee's ruby queen hybrid sweet corn. towards the end of that season, i discovered baker creek heirloom seeds, and so made the switch from storebought hybrids to mostly heirloom, homegrown plants (started the seeds myself, with no prior experience. made me feel big and bad)
garden was mostly tomatoes this year, planning to reduce the number of tomatoes next year and get rid of sweet corn altogether because it takes up too much room. potatoes and squash will be taking sweet corn's place.
as far as plants go, corn is my favorite. i love everything about it, from the shape of the plant itself, to the smell of boiling corn. i also love the smell of a corn patch in the morning when the dew is still on the leaves. nothing quite like it. i also discovered several types of flour corn that grow in my ridiculously short season here in utah and grew a good sized patch with a decent harvest. i just wish i had more land.
i am also in love with peppers, both sweet and horribly hot. i tried bhut jolokia for the first time a week ago. i didnt grow them, but one of the other members on idig sent them to me. they are too hot for me, and i like the taste of habaneros better anyway, so even though i will grow them next year, i dont know if i will continue to grow them past that.
those are the two i love the most, but i also grow cucumbers, pumpkins, tomatoes, several different kinds of vegetables.
outside the garden, i have lots of different hobbies. i like to lift weights every once in awhile, although i havent done nearly enough of it the past year. i love fishing and hunting, though the past couple years have not been great for hunting. i like guns, i like trucks, and beautiful women i play guitar a little, but need to practice more. i paint and draw a little.
i love to cook as well. thats one of the best things about having a garden, is to see it go from a seed to the dinner plate. its like magic.
as far as politics goes, im a conservative, but not a republican, with some liberal leanings on some issues. i prefer not to talk about politics in gardening forums though. ive done it a couple times at idig, and ive found i always end up going too far saying mean things that i usually dont mean.....usually ;D
im just now getting into the whole seed saving thing, and probably wont be fully operational in it till the end of next season. just doing some trial runs this year. so i would love to trade what little i have, but its not much. lots of varieties, but only a few seeds of each of those varieties.
thats about it. if you want to know anything else, just go ahead and ask.
oh yeah, im a steelworker. thats about it
