Hello all,
Has anyone grown this yet. I found some Burpee seed for it. It looks a lot like Red Zebra, but it is a hybrid so it must be better. I did some searches for it and found one place that called it an "improvement over the heirloom Red Zebra." Wow, I didn't know that Red Zebra was an heirloom.

Pugs, I had bad luck with Red Lightening last year. Weak seedlings. Weak transplants. Poor flower production. BER. Hard core. Definitely inferior to Green Zebra and Mr. Stripey, if they have any genetic relation to Red Lightening. The word "hybrid" appended to a Burpee Variety doesn't automatically convey "vigor" IMO. Bill

Bill,
Thanks for the input. What is BER?
I was going for sarcasm on the improvement part, I guess it wasn't strong enough. I'll do better next time ;D

BER = blossom end rot, a tissue issue related to calcium depravation; but some varieties seem more prone than others. Go ahead and try one. It may do really well for you in an entirely different climate, soil and garden culture.

Thanks for the explanation Bill. I think I'll try one and see how it does and compares to Red Zebra.

I grew Red Lightening last year and wasn't particularly impressed, however, you know me, I saved some seeds to growout in the next couple years just to see what happens, the coloration is nice. It would be nice to have a bit of the more expanded coloration in green zebra, so maybe in time I'll mess with that.

I had no luck even germinating Red Zebra last yr. I'll try again along with Copia.

Hi all,
Thinking it was something new, I got extra packs of seeds. If someone wants to try some let me know with a PM, I'll send you 10 or so seeds. I'll divide up the packs I have. Should be enough for 5 or 6 people.
I plan grow a few and like Alan save seed and see how they segregate out.

I was potting up the seedlings today and got to the Red Lightning ones. Good germination and they are growing about as well as my other seedlings. Funny thing, one of the seedlings looks like it is PL. I couldn't have mixed up the seeds as the ones in the spots next to it weren't PL ones.
I think I'm going to plant that one out seperate and see what it does.
Now, to get back to transplanting. I must have been in denial about how many I started. I have way too many. I think I'll be bagging flowers this year.
