Will be glad to help you this year! Glad to see someone here show some interest in tobacco. I'll be starting my seeds here in Southern Indiana next week. Shortly i'll be posting tons of links here to articles about growing, curing, fermenting and aging tobacco. I can't wait to grow this seed out this year and share the new seed with the world! -Alan

I've got some nicotiana sprouts right now. There's a tall variety that comes back every year since I tried a few types a few years ago, too. I think it's night scented? - long white flowers... It's a nice surprise to see that there are still so many varieties available.

There are a few different types of burley (several 100 actually) but they are all about the same as far as smoking and ornamental purposes, just disease resistance differences for the most part, though a few have superior leaf shape/type. Be careful with the shamanic tobacco "nicotiana rustica" as it is very potent and can cause nicotine poising if even handled by a non-smoker with a week tolerance to nicotine.

Sounds like a good one for making insecticide...

Yep, just don't spray it when the bees are around, it's very broad spectrum stuff!

Do you make a spray from fresh leaves, or dried only?

Usually it is made from dried, powdered leaves in an aerated tea form, if you don't have any dry you can always make a trip to the tobacco shop!

Well, how's the tobacco farming these days?
Alan, did you see the link I posted?
My usual two types have volunteered. One is tall, the other is short - that's about all I know about them, besides they smell good. My brother comes over occasionally and harvests some leaves to dry. He says it's very good.

Johno, the tobacco trials went pretty well, unfortunately I was only able to grow about 1/4 of what was listed due to space and isolation distances, my favorites personally were the orinico varieties, followed by the twist buds, next year I'll be growing a few different types again and making some new crosses, selcting for "multiple purpose"/"multiple process" types, but with particular interest to those which can be used for Perique tobacco which is what I was selecting for with my Robert Johnson White Burley tobacco (which is actually a white burley/Perique cross). I will be processing a bit of it this winter!

Alan, have you ordered from New Hope Seed Company?

Yep, I've ordered from New Hope Seed company quite often, they are a very good company and have the largest inventory of rare open pollinated tobaccos available to home gardeners and farmers, there are some of particular interest to the Burley and Virginia gold growers of Indiana and KY and I encourage anyone with an interest in the history or with seeking out a rare variety of tobacco to check out their site.
