Someone on another forum (from Texas) asked me about varieties for these. They want to have them for a 4th of July BBQ. The only variety she is growing is Big Boy. Any suggestions?

maybe Better bush? I would think that an early determinate would be good for that.

Alan brought me some green Celebrity around Thanksgiving time from his greenhouse crop. I had never tried fried green tomatoes, so thought I would give it a go. Wasn't really even sure what they were 'supposed' to taste like. They had a twang much like a Sweetart. So, if the twang is what you are looking for, I can say the Celebrity should fit the bill. I didn't care for it myself, but after you see the movie, seems like you should try it at least. Karen

You can use any tomato. It is a common veggie here where we are. I like to put them in buttermilk and then fry them with corn meal. I would suggest some season salt as well. Plain and simple. Yummy. Some of the old timers fry them in bacon grease. I have a strong fear of bacon grease so that does not happen at our house!

Thanks everyone. I figured it was just an unripe fruit.

It's hard to beat a big ole plate of fried green 'maters with some ranch for dipping

I love friend green tomatoes, particularly fried in KY kernel seasoning and with some horseraddish sauce. I like it when mine are getting ready to ripen and are yellowish-red on the inside, delicious!
