Mike I couldn't tell you how dark it is, I've raised Silkies in years past but they were the children's pets. Today I was reading an article on a different web sight about how well they sell into the Asian markets because of the black meat and bones were thought to have medical properties. I just thought wow - now there's something I didn't know

All I know is that Silkies have no white meat on them. Even the breast is dark meat. I think Blue may have had them. Hayne, when you get time, can you start a thread on winter care of chickens? Please? If you can find the page from last yr, that's good. I just want a separate thread for it. Thanks

When researching poultry breeds several years ago, I learned that Asians prize and pay more for animals with black skins. Silkies and Iberian pigs being the only 2 animals I can think of at the moment. Anyway, the belief is that the black skin indicates general health properties. This kinda falls in line with recently publicized research touting fruits and veg that have deeper color have greater nutritional value. How real that is falls beyond my scope of knowledge, but hey, it can't hurt. Besides, Asians base their beliefs on 1,000s of years of observation not just a few years of modern research.
I've seen the dead results in the market, the skins are a lovely deep grey, sort of bluish to neutral in shading. I can't speak for the meat or the bones. I failed to notice those things much to my regret.
Chinese cultures are more on this than Japanese, Korean, Thai or other groups. So, if you have a Chinese population of any sort, I would encourage you to give this a shot. Also, for the purposes of biodiversity, give it a shot. If you like the idea that it might be better for you, what the heck? Give it a shot!
When we start up our chickens, I am hoping to land a few silkies along with a Spanish breed. I think... maybe... we'll see... ;o)

Black as in a dark bruise. It doesn't effect the flavor of the meat however.
