I'm thinking of getting some rabbits, maybe giant chinchilla or silver fox heritage breeds. Just wondering if anyone keeps rabbits, and what kind of operation it is. Has anyone ( you city dwellers ) had problems with the city officials considering rabbits as livestock, not pets?

They sell them in pet stores which makes them pets. lol I'm sure you could keep a few in a hutch outside without any problems. Don't laugh, but call the local Humane Society. There will be a ton of bunnies needing homes in the near future.

Do I ever have rabbits. I live where it doesn't matter, but city folks might object because they don't know the facts. You can get stackable cages that could be kept in your garage or outbuilding and no one would know you have them. They don't bark all night like dogs, or have stinky poo like both cats and dogs, but still there may be objections. You will need a big cage for the giants, and the silver fox is a pretty breed. You won't find any better fertilizer for your garden than rabbit poo, and you don't have to worry about composting it first. It can go right on your plants straight. We raise mini lops and my husband is really into showing them. The winner of the 2009 nationals is from southern MI, maybe in your neck of the woods.

I've considered having some rabbits as urban manure produces. I would definitely have food for them in the warm months no probs from the garden and would be happy for what they give back.
When I lived in the country, we had this rule of thumb.
If you call 'em bunnies they're 'pets' but rabbits are food.
