I would rather order all females and pay a little extra for it. I don't want or need a roo. And I don't have the heart to cull them.

www.meyerhatchery.com/page_205.htm I was surfing the web when i came across this site that offer as little as three chicks at a time. They are expensive but you get them express mail and a heating pad to keep them warm. I hope this help the people only wanting a few chickens.

I bought a man out of the poulty business this week.
Here is a total of the chickens i bought earlier in the week. 12 Rhode Island Red Hens 3 Yellow look like New Hampshire but probably not Hens 2 Black hens i think they are the ones that lay easter eggs hens 4 other black & white hens ( i don't have any idea what they are 5 RI R Roosters 5black& white roosters the ones i have no idea what they are 12 banty hens 3 3 banty roosters 3 silkie i don't know if they are hens or roosters yet. It too damn cold to stand around watching them as it take twice the normal time just deicing the water.
Not bad for 50 dollars.

You did Great, Down!!!
For $50, you have a good cross section of breeds and a chance to 'test drive' a few to see if you like them or not?
Keep us posted on how they do, especially once the weather warms up and you have more opportunity to work with them outdoors.

Agreed, that's quite the score. It sure does make up some for the dog and jungle fowl problems earlier last year. Congrats.
Question: I have some hens laying green eggs. Are those what people call easter eggers? They have fluffy cheeks and beards. I thought they were ameraucaunas or basically something crossed w/ aracaunas somewhere down the line? Is that right, Blue/Down?

Blue will know what breeds lay pastel eggs. I know the aracaunas do. They are a difficult egg to sell here. The last lady who lived in my house couldn't give them away.

Araucanas (rumpless/tail-less breed) are the ones that lay green eggs. Ameracaunas (muffs/beards/with tails) are the ones that lay the pastel coloured (Easter Eggers they are affectionately called).
If you cross breed them to a brown or white egg layer, the colour with be dominant, if I remember correctly.

Hmm. I've got ameracaunas laying blue/green eggs. Is that considered pastel? And I now have a mystery pullet laying some small dark brown matte finished eggs, too. I think it may be my production red pullet as she's always out with the layers in the bamboo but I don't know for sure. I need a hen cam or something.

I sold ten hens today and made alot more than i paid for the whole bunch. I still have 7 laying hens for myself also all of the bantys and the silkie too. I am trying to sell my Jungle Fowl and some of the bantys. I also harvested 3 of the extra roosters today and still have 4 more left so this deal is turning out pretty good for me lol. I wish i could find someone else who want to get out of the chicken business.

Blue you will be glad to hear that i sold my Jungle Fowl today alone with all of the banty that i bought last week plus a pair of Easter egg chicken today. This leaves me with 6 hens 5 roosters and a nice chuck of change lol. Not bad of a deal for a ole country boy . Plus i have already harvested 3 of the extra roosters and one made some good chicken and dumpling for last nite supper.
