Just got six young Guineas off of a fellow market vendor the other day. I'm keeping them with the chickens at the moment untill they get sure of where home is at. Next spring I will probably let them free range but I would like to get some more and hatch some keets.
Anybody else here raise Guineas? Anything important I should know that I may not? Anybody got any Guineas or no anyone who has Gunineas for sale in Indiana? I don't want day olds or anything to small since it's getting colder and I don't want full sized guineas, any suggestions?

My uncle used to have some at the farm, I would get the job to kill and trim them.... beware, they are better flyers than chickens ;D ;D and have more temper, but it was so long ago...
The meat is kind of denser, more flavourful, sometimes tough. I saw them last year at the grocery store for 99 cents a pound. They remind me of pheasants, really, maybe a bit tougher, but these are memories from my youth, and I don't know if they were properly cooked...

A friend used to have a large flock of guinea fowl. They would stand in the roadway and stop traffic. Also liked to dine on the bits of gravel in her asphalt shingled roof. They are loud and they do like to travel. I've never raised them. Consequently, every spring when I attend a particular poultry auction, I consider buying one to invite to dinner. But I've always managed to leave before that lot makes it to the auction block. Only .99c a lb Mike?? Wow. What grocery store was that?? I've never ever seen them in a grocery here.

Well Alan, I have never had guineas, but I know a guy who does, maybe he would sell you a few. But I'm sure they wouldn't be cheap, he kind of is a jerk. Do they allow animal sales at the Washington county market? Since you are branching out to fowl, you might as well go ahead and get some ducks. And maybe some quail. And if you have quail, you might as well have pheasants. You know you will eventually.
