I saw a Gold Pheasant at the county fair last year and thought it was the most beautiful bird I had ever seen. Does anybody raise these?

Probably an Amherst Gold, Johno. They are lovely. But my niece raises them, and I'm told that the males can be quite nasty. You'd also want secure housing for them. They are not known for staying at home (or returning on their own).

There's a picture of a gold pheasant (or something similar) on page 18 of the Autumn '07 issue of The Heirloom Gardener.

We used to have a pair, and the males are absolutely beautiful. We had them in a pen, so I don't know about their habits of staying around, but I would want something with a top on it so nothing could get it. He was a bit of a nervous type bird, constantly walking back and forth, but he was never mean. The silver is also a beautiful bird. I guess for that matter, so is a ringneck. I would like to get some again, but husband doesn't like the idea. So, I probably WILL get some.

I don't know anything about pheasant, really. Do they need more space in a pen than chickens do?

Johno i would check with your wildlife agency and see if you need a permit to have one as they mite be consider a game bird.
