I know you all have chicken pix to share so lets see 'em! Here are some pix of some of my crew from last year, when they were just wee babies (under a year) This is NewDheli (Delaware hen) Henry the rooster (RIR) and Thunder Thighs (Cochin hen) she got stolen. Laurence and Sheba our Sultan pair NewDheli, Evil Chicken (Orpington roo) and Pocahontas (BSL hen) Henry a little later in the year This Carmilla. Saw her at Atwoods with a missing eye and a crooked jaw and unable to stand so I bought her and too her home and she is where the chicken "farm" began. All these chickies were supposed to be hens but I'm not so great at sexing The only ones not shown here are our Turkens and soem a neighbour lady gave us.

Okay, guess I better go take some pics. New ones.. Two turkey poults in the basement that just hatched yesterday, but they were awful sleepy earlier when I went to see how they were adjusting to life with week old chickens.. Have a Chantecler chick still in the hatcher. My old camera used to be fine for taking pics thru the hatcher window, but the flash on this new one is just turning everything that close white? Must be a way around that, I just haven't figured it out yet. Also have today's updated pigs digging pics to upload. Back in a Flash (pun intended of course ;D) SULTANS....I'm soooo jealous.. And yes, I would love to see your pics of the Turkens. Another breed I adore, but am forbidden from getting, LOL. There were Bantam Turkens at the 2004 National Show in Syracuse, NY. They were soooooo cute..But I'd like Standard Turkens. At least if I find out I don't care for a breed, when it's a standard, I can put it to good use as dinner.. I don't have the patience for plucking something that fits in my hand.

oh blue, those are wonderful pics! ) we were given three banty babies the year we moved here in 89 and they turned out to be one rooster (roo) and two hens luckily. we also had two Kahki Campbell ducks that turned out to be boys. they got along great with roo and his crew till we were given some female ducks in trade for eggs for the school kids to incubate. that's when the fighting began. our poor pup used to stand in between the ducks and chickens...so funny! )

I'm jealous. I want chickens sooo bad.
Question for the chicken-havers: With the sultans and silkies do you have to worry about grooming at all? It seems like their feathers would get to be a mess.

House, Crested breeds have a terrible time with crest mites. Not the normal bugs that a regular chicken gets, but extremely difficult to eradicate mites that persist on living in the crests. And they are always worse in areas that have high humidity, like the Pacific Northwest or here around the Great Lakes. And featherlegged breeds such as Sultans or Silkies or Cochins can have problems with leg mites cuz it's easier to hide in the feathers than on a clean leg. I had Light Brahmas for a while. Colour is very similar to Jessi's Delaware. White bird with white feathers on their legs. Spring Rains and White leg & foot feathers = brown scraggly mess. I bathe my Polish before shows, and more often than that if they need a good cleaning up. If you only have a few, it's not too bad. But before we went to the big show in Indy last fall I bathed 45 birds in the days immediately prior to the show. When it's a bantam bird without fancy crests, it's not too difficult. But a lot of my fowl weigh 8 or 10 lbs. Try bathing something that big that doesn't want to be wet X 20 of them. It can be very tiring and wet!!! Buff Laced Polish Pair out on Grass today. Here's the Bantam Frizzled Turkens at the 2004 National Show. Note: These don't belong to me. I just think they were really cool looking so I asked to take a pic. And here's what a Breach Birth looks like in the Poultry world, LOL Bourbon Red Turkey Poults from 2005 Unlike chicks, they are much taller, ganglier and not too bright. But darn cute.

Those are all great. I figured there'd be a catch to fancy chickens. Now I want turkens, too, though. The chicken in the washtub is gorgeous. Lucky chicken people...grr.

How big does the Delaware breed get. I have never seen one in person but it looks like a good breed. All of my chickens are mixed breed and banty.

Jessi said she got her Delaware from Atwoods, which means it's Ideal Hatchery's reproduction of the Delaware breed. I had one a pullet a few years back. The rest of the shipment died. She was about 6 lbs at maturity. Laid a nice egg. But bad attitude..We found a better use for her, lol
If you could still find a purebred Delaware (show quality), the males are supposed to be about 10 or 11 lbs if memory serves me correctly. Good sized bird and I love that colour pattern. But alas, the original types from the northeast are now as rare as hen's teeth.

Blue, I got my Delaware from a breeder here in AR...Carmilla (the one witht he crooked beak and missing eye came from Atwoods). I also got my Cochin (the one that got stolen) from Atwoods as well. Chickens are awesome and alot like dogs. Its so funny that the only dog they are scared of is Schnitzel (the Dachshund) they could care less about the Pit Bulls and the English Bulldog I will take some new pix as soon as it stops raining here...which will be the end of the week

FP, That's a nice little barred rock. She's got a little ruffle to her comb, like the females in one of my Australorp bloodlines has as their signature trait. Jessi, I hope the rains subside. Looking forward to seeing more Chic Pics of your flock,

Hey Blue what kind of soap do you use to wash your chicken before a show.
