There's a mention of brewing rootbeer on the side. My wife Heather made a couple gallons of root beer last spring, only she let it brew too long and made 'hard' root beer by accident. It actually wasn't too bad.

I am planning on making a hybrid root beer/bitter in a couple weeks. For now, I am getting ready later this week to put a chocolate oatmeal stout into process. I figure cheating is the way to go for my root beer ale. Gonna get some Gnome root beer extract, some makings for a bitter ale ( which somewhat perversely is less bitter than most ales ) and shoot for a 2.5% session beer that tastes like root beer.

Does anybody make rootbeer the old fashioned way, with actual root? I was on a site that said most 'rootbeer' extract was made with wintergreen. I grow Aralia racemosa, and just planted an Aralia-sorry can't remember species right now. They are plants that have an off-white bloom, and beautiful berries that turn from wine red to purple in late summer. Might be worth growing lots of them for someone who was into making their own rootbeer.

I was told that the Sasparilla root necessary for real root beer is no longer available and should not be used if you grow it. Apparently it is rather strong as an herbal medicine.
