Aquaponic Rice

Hello,
I have been entertaining the idea of growing rice in an Aquaponic system. I learned here that the reason for the water is weed control so, that tells me that rice would grow well with fish waste and water on a timer. Would the timer be set for every 30 minutes, every hour or more. I thought about setting the grow box drain up a bit higher to keep the roots wet, thereby allowing for (possibly) a longer cycle. Has anyone here done this? Any thoughts?

Well, not quite what you had in mind, but this past fall I was given a 'tour' of one of the local market gardener's farms. He was growing rice in five gallon buckets. Yes, outdoors open to the weather, but contained.

There are also 'upland' varieties of rice that don't need to be flooded.

But, back to your original question...I think the higher drain/longer cycle would probably good...

I have been planning and gathering up plastic containers to build an aquaponic, indoor lettuce and herb grower, and also for starting my seedlings for spring. I had a terrible time with seedlings just dying off for no apparent reason last spring. So, I thought aquaponics, with fish in the aquarium, just might be my answer to the problems that I had.

We also have a pond, we dug it ourselves with rental equipment. Obviously we are not experts, the pond does not exactly hold water like planned. It does always hold about 3-4 feet and the frogs and waterfowl seem to like it. But, it just isn't deep enough for fish, and we simply don't seem able to fix it, other than.... hire a professional. So, while I was considering small grains to try to grow. Rice crossed my mind, and I thought of my pond... if you can call it a pond. Why wouldn't rice grow there? I have seen rice fields in Arkansas so I know that it will grow here, if I can just: 1- find seed... 2- research how to grow it.
I had not even given aquaponics a thought in this direction... Thanks for redirecting my brain...
