Next question = How many super max would you start with if you were using the smaller sized supers?

The first year I would start a new hive with one super; adding one every time the bees fill a super to about 75% capacity. Limiting the excessive space eliminates having more space than the bees can protect. In the second year on a well established hive you could add two at a time in the spring and early summer if you have a good nectar flow - I generally apply the 75% rule of thumb during hive inspections to determine the need for an additional super.
