Did any of you that keep bees ever have a problems with crab spiders??I am curious about this because last summer I had a problem with crab spiders killing bees in my garden...They were mainly on the black-eyed susans and teddy bears sunflowers, both of which the bees seemed to like to visit often..I had never seen these type of spiders before, and while an unusual-looking spider, they are cold-blooded killers of bees..They blend in with the flower petal color and lie there motionless for long periods of time with their front claws(pinchers?legs?)held apart..An unsuspecting bee comes along, lands on the flower and instantly those claws lock in on the bee...The bee doesn't have a chance..It seems to paralyze the bee and suck it dry or something..Its an awful thing to see..I don't mind ordinary garden spiders, they are so helpful, but I would rather have bees flitting around than to have these little killers lying in wait for its next victim...

They undoubtedly do kill bees, along with other predators. Losing a few workers isn't going to do a colony any harm though. A bee is a large meal for a spider so I wonder how many they really kill in a lifetime.
