Do not know of an herbal remedy, but I normally use a drink made from cactus. Tequila shots, they will cure about anything.

If you've got some prickly ash trees growing, they're great for numbing 'til you can get to the dentist.

Johno, clove oil should be part of your basic medicine cabinet. To make it:
Put a 1/-4 cup of whole cloves in a non-reactive pan. Cover with 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil. Put in the oven and set temperature to low. Let it sit that way half a day. Turn off heat, but leave the pot in the oven overnight.
Strain the oil through a cheesecloth-lined strainer. Store in a cool, dark place (I put it up in brown or blue dropper bottles).
For a toothache, drip a couple of drops of the oil on the affected area.

Don't have cloves on hand, but do have a garden full of various herbs... So I used myself as a guinea pig.
I tried placing comfrey on the tooth - no pain relief, but I hope it heals whatever the problem is...
A garlic clove held on the tooth does offer some pain relief, and has antiseptic qualities...
Mexican Marigold seemed to alleviate some pain. Also antiseptic...
The surprise, to me, was that a mint leaf held on the tooth worked pretty well as a pain reliever - better than the other stuff, anyway.
In the end, I found a partial bottle of vicadin from last year - it doesn't really work much better than the mint...

I guessed it was infected, so I ate half a bulb of fresh garlic at a time, and drank apple cider vinegar. I figured that would kill any bugs in my system. After two weeks of excruciating pain, that seemed to do the trick. Screw a dentist! Now I still have all of my teeth, and I can chew with both sides of my mouth again!
