Greengrass - you may have a surplus of wax in your ear. If you ran a fever during your cold, the wax that naturally lines your ear canal may have gotten melty. It then tends to settle a bit, and can block the canal. If you are SURE you don't have an ear infection (which generally involves ear pain and fever, and can also involve jaw pain and behind-ear headache) you can irrigate your canal with either hydrogen peroxide or saline solution. Warm it to about room temp (NOT hot) and squirt it gently into your ear. There are ear bulb tools that are made for this. Be sure you do not have an infection first, though, because irrigating an infected ear can spread the infection and exacerbate the pain. Whatever you do, and however tempted you are, don't stick anything in there to try to get the wax out, like a q-tip. Those things just make the situation worse. Good luck!

To clear chest congestion, the old folks in french canada used to put piece of old wool shirts in the oven to warm them, then cover one side of it with good old mustard and then put us in bed to keep the chest warm.
We called that '' mouches à la moutarde'' which translates into ''mustard flies''. I never got to understand the name, but it sure worked.

My old Mexican bricklayer's remedy is probably too rough for most gringos...
But what my dad used to do for me when I was a kid (when I had a cold) was mix warm honey and lemon juice with a shot of good old Kentucky bourbon. Sure made me feel better.
If your cold is too rough for that to work, the bricklayer's remedy is to go home and drink a pint of tequila, sleep it off, take a shower and get back to work! Kills any bugs in your system!
