Alan, don't know what they are paying, but a buyer put an ad in our paper that they are wanting it.

I know Tony's Root Co. down at French Lick buys it. Last year it was like......$12/lb or some such. Didn't seem hardly worth it! I saw a sign at what used to be "Blue River Canoes" that they were buying too. Some also buy the tops...

If your in the State of Indiana at the moment and see that someone is wanting yellow root/golden seal right now, do not sell it, I repeat do not sell it.
It's out of season at the moment and I bet on anything that this is a sting operation, I've seen it done with golden seal as well as ginseng.
The laws are kind of hazy and hard to interpret but for whatever reason it's not legal to dig until ginseng season, even though yellow root completes flowering and bearing fruit long before that time.
I also wanted to add, it's not really worth the time to dig, the price stays low and it's pretty endangered in Indiana and all accross the growing region as it stands, it is one of those crops better left alone or used for wildcrafting home grown medicine, much more valuable in my opinion to leave to create and preserve larger stands and use for your medical needs than to sell for pennies.
Hoosierheights, are you going to have much Ginseng to sell this year?

I hadn't even paid attention to the season! I grow it in my flower garden, and Gene at Munchkin Nursery sells plants. I think he usually sells out, it really isn't too hard to grow in the garden with the right soil and light conditions. Not exactly a stand out plant, but ok.

I don't know how much I'll have this year to sell. I moved some roots this past year and I think I lost all them to poorly drained soil.
I don't think there is a season for digging yellowroot in Indiana. Not that I could find on the 'net.
