Have you ever dug this root. It is a small plant with roots that look like turnip.

I found this article on it... 2bnthewild.com/plants/H46.htmIts a beautiful plant, I can't say as I've ever seen them around here. On wikipedia it said to be careful with it because it can be poisonous. ***I was talking to Alan just a second ago, and he said that medicinally this root is used when one thinks they might have an intestinal parasite. As it causes violent emptying of the intestines.*** Just thought I'd throw that one in there.

Keep in mind that this is if eaten in a decent quantity. I will say this though, depending on the time of the year, they will set your mouth on fire!

Indian Turnip
Botanical Name: Arisaema triphyllum
Common Names and Synonyms: Jack-in-the-Pulpit
Background: Indian turnip was used by American Indians for stomach and bowel complaints. The plant is white, and its root resembles a small turnip. The Indians ate the berries and leaves surrounding the flowers, but considered the root poisonous. The fresh rhizome is very toxic, and can burn the mouth in the raw state, but once dried, loses its astringent quality. The Iroquois used the Indian Turnip as a food and as a medicine. The Osage and Shawnee Indians used the Indian Turnip for fevers and coughs. For malaria, they combined it with snakeroot and wild cherry bark for a tonic to be taken after the fever broke. The Ojibwa and Menomonee Indians used the root for eye sores, and the Medkwakis used the chopped root on snakebites.
I goggle this as backgroud of something that happen to me about twenty years ago.
My hunting buddy and myself were squirrel hunting and walking thru the wood to get to the trees that the squirrel were cutting when he spotted some indian turnip and decide to dig them up. It seem that someone he worked with had brag that he could eat anything hot l. Seem like he could drink hot sauce like water and hot pepper did nothing to him. So my buddy carries the Indian Turnip to work , There were three of them and before my buddies could warn him the guy snatch all three and eats them. This guy end up in the emergency room and they give him some medicine for his mouth. Seems like this guy never bragged about eating hot stuff again. My buddy said they nickname him OLD SMOKEY because he was steamy lol.

Hehehe...Thats funny...
Sounds like a similar story that my Dad likes to tell about my uncle feeding him ramps...My Mom was NOT happy with my uncle that night. And from the way they tell that story I wouldn't go near my Dad for a couple of days, cause apparently he stunk.
