OK, I haven't fished much since I was a kid, but as part of attempting to live a more self-sustainable lifestyle I'd like to get back into it.
Mostly I am just interested in bass fishing and catfish, though sunfish and bluegill will be on the menu ocassionally.
Anyhow, what I need is a good rod and real which is reasonably priced, as in 50-100 dollars.
Any suggestions?

You should be able to pick up a rod and reel "kit" at Wal-Mart or some type of "outfitters" store. We have Eastern Outfitters here. The cost should be about $30 plus the cost of bait. Though, you would probably want to use worms particularly at this time of year. Also, I'm ignorant about your area, but if you were fresh water fishing around here you would plan on sunfish, bluegill, and crappie as the staples with occasional bass and catfish. But that is here and here is not there. If you have an outfitters shop around and it's anything like ours, the folks get real friendly and talkative especially when you let 'em know that you are convinced they are way more knowledgeable about the particular topic and you hope to learn from the best.
Another item of note, it's smart to go for the smaller fish as they have the lowest mercury content and these day virtually all fish have mercury.

Another suggestion would be to find a guy who custom builds rods and see if you can do a trade.

I would stay away from the kits. Get an Ugly Stick and a $30 shimano spinning reel. Not a fantastic combo, but dependable and the rod is not going to break. Get a medium action rod. Get a reel that is set for 8-12lb test line.

You can find Ugli Stick kits that are pretty much that combo...usually about $10 to $15 less than the individual components...but yeah that combo should be good enough for any and is pretty much what I use (except mine is ultra-light, not medium...I usually prefer trout fishing).
