Hi everybody! I am looking for a wide variety of Hubbards to give to one of my Master Gardener friends who was very generous in donating flower and herb plants to the Heirloom Seed Shop last year. Also, I am considering a breeding project with C. moschatas. Any varieties of them would be appreciated, especially if they are African in origin, or just particularly good ones. ;D I have a variety of seeds to trade, especially tomatoes Thanks, John

Hi again John...
I see you're not getting much of a response here.. Maybe i can help you out. Sorry i could only find a couple of Cucurbita Moschata seeds left from last season, but you're welcome to have these. Only have 10 left, it's "xmehen k'vum - early squash".. from Mexico. Now they didn't make it in my garden cause of the drought an all this season, but they're supposed to be dark green skinned, orange flesh, patty pan shaped with small seeds. At least i can say they do have small seeds. Supposedly they grow about 6" in dia, and 2 1/2" length.
Then if you're still looking for the hubbards, you can take a look at my list. I got pounds of green hubbard, and blue hubbard left from last year. Sorry no golden hubbard or orange as some people call em.
I do have one trial hubbard from Argentina you might want though.. again i only have 10 seeds leftover. No real name... just "Zapallo, Hubbard rojo".. which i'm guessing means red hubbard or orange hubbard squash in Argentine speak. Could be wrong though.. rojo could mean anything as far as i know. And again these didn't make it in my garden either.. got too late of a start. I know they call every squash Zapallo, and hubbard speaks for itself. So.....
Then the closest i could find to african, was some no name cucurbita maxima's from ethiopia and some Queensland Blue from south africa.. again a Maxima type.
I might be able to find alot more Zappallos if i look hard enough.. but right now i haven't gone thru all the seeds that i had packed away for the summer. In case you don't know.. Zappallo is also a common nick-name for hubbards in alot of seed catalogs. So it just might be worth looking thru those.
Anyways if you want last years seeds let me know... Dave

Dave, I'm definitely interested in the moschata you mentioned "Xmehen k'vum!" Early moschatas are hard to find and high on my priority list.
As for the Hubbards, I've recieved a few, but I need to inventory them so I don't request something I already have. So I'll have to get back to you on those, but I think you have some I'd like.
Thank you!

Hey Johno, you might head over to www.liseed.org and drop Ken an e-mail about his native hubbard mix too, i'm sure he would be glad to send you a small sample to trial several different types, there are definetly a few of those in the winter squash mix I sent you too. -Alan

He was online yesterday at 5:37pm. Obviously he's around; just not posting and not corresponding with people?? You aren't the only one wondering what's up

Johno - that moschata I emailed you about (the Musquée de Provence with no provenance) is SO fragrant and pretty! Even my husband commented on it when he cut it up for me. The seeds are pretty close to ready to send, but I haven't cut into the one called "red warty thing" yet. Would you like the fairy tale seeds now? Also, I know you're doing some breeding experiments, so how many would you like? I assume you want to grow some w/o crossing them, so that you have a baseline. Let me know!

All in one package would be fine - I won't start any squash seeds until spring, don't need the Hubbards until Feb. or so. Thank You!

Sorry i didn't see this earlier..
My computer finally bit the dust for good 2 days ago, and now it's going to the garbage. I was online yesterday for just a few minutes, just long enough to check my emails and a few message boards. Musta missed this thread. Right now i'm using my sisters computer for just a couple hours a day... just a few hours during the day when i can get a chance.
I did find alot of info on the Xmehen k'vum.. but no pictures. Apparentlly there are some different spellings of this one... so that's how i found the info. Unfortunately i had all the websites bookmarked on my computer and now i can't get back to those sites without going thru another search. If i can get the time to use this computer i will try looking em up again.
Lavandulagirl those Musquée de Provence sound great.. you wouldn't want to trade some of em would ya? I have a few pepos right now and some leftover seeds from last season. I'm still waiting on another order with more moschata's, but so far it hasn't arrived.
If you or Johno want any of my squash seeds let me know. Johno, if you PM me your address i will get those xmehen k'vum squash ready to mail ya... I might wait a couple days to see if the new order arrives before i mail it though... hopefully they will arrive here soon.
Anyways, i'm still around.. just may take me longer to respond now that i'm not online as much.
Dave

Dave - you're welcome to some seeds... just be warned that I bought this pumpkin at a grocery store, so while they may have called it Musquée de Provence, and it may have looked like it, I have absolutely no idea how it was grown, or what kinds of isolation distances were maintained. All I can say is it is pretty. In any case, PM me your address, and we can figure something out, if you're still interested. I am definitely going to grow some out myself, because whatever this pumpkin is, it was the best smelling pumpkin flesh I have ever sniffed!

I'm still interested... some of my best squashes have come from seeds i saved from fruits i bought at roadside stands.
Just so you all know i got another shipment of squash seeds today.. sorry it wasn't the moschatas.. just the remainder of the pepos i ordered last month. I'll go put a list in the thread Jeff started called American_gardeners trade list.. or something like that. Didn't get many only about 25 varieties and i can only spare about 10-15 seeds for each person who wants any. I got about 30-50 extra seeds of each, but i want to make sure i can have some for alan and a few of you other guys to each have some.
I'll PM you my address after i get done listing these... Dave
