I was watching the purple martins fly today and i find it amazing that they can change direction so fast. they make a big circle around their nest but if they see something to eat they can catch it going so fast. Man they are SUPER.

I have some doves that have started roosting in my pine trees. They better be glad it not hunting season or if the owl does not eat them. I could sit and listen to their coooing for awhile.

Male Painted Buntings began to show up at our feeders this weekend. What a colorful bird.
Yesterday morning I had a Painted Bunting on the feeder, with five Doves and 5 Squirrels on the ground.

My barn swallows that were nesting in my carport have moved away. They raised 6 chicks last year from the same nest and the mother bird was sitting on the nest a few days ago then they were gone.

I noticed that a sparrow had made a nest on the purple marlin house. They cannot get into the house so they build a nest on the deck. I guess next year i will putup a sparrow trap.

I've noticed that we have lots of uncommon birds this year. So far I've identified indigo buntings, summer tanningers and red-breasted grosbeaks among the ones we don't normally see.

Can anyone help indefinity this bird for me. I was sitting under a pine-tree resting my back after gardening and i notice a lttle brown bird running along the tree branches and then i saw several more. I have a row of pine-tree at the back of my lot that i set out about twenty years ago. I ask my wife if she notice them and she had to and said it looked like a Worn but she didnot know for sure. For all who donot know where i live it is close to the Mississippi River and in West Tenn if that helps anyone to know what kind of bird it is.

There were three broad-winged hawks circling overhead on a thermal here yesterday. So neat to see those. They were all molting, with a couple of feathers missing in each wing and the tail. I heard them before I saw them -- very distinctive call.
Downinmyback, I think little brown birds are the hardest to identify, even when you have the bird in sight and a field guide in your hand. Did you mean it looked like a wren? If you see it again, try to get a good look at the shape of the beak and see if it's long, short, fat, skinny, curved, straight, or what.

Also, lots of wren species hold their tail up high, which I see in them and in nuthatches (another small, brown bird!) more than any others. Does the bird sing? The wren has a HUGE voice for it's little body.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep seed in the bird feeders because of the blasted squirrels. The dogs will chase them, but a catch is rare. We have started putting seed out in small quantities during the late afternoon in order for us to sit and watch the birds. We have tried squirrel proof feeders and baffles on the poles, but so far nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Yesterday evening I walked around the corner of the house and looked down the hill to my garden. There were five crows lined up on the fence checking out my garden. Do scarecrows really work?

I don't think so. Did you know a group of crows is called a murder? Cool, huh?

Lav. You are so odd but that's a good thing, IMO. We had a lot of crows in the early spring but they seem to have moved on. They took a lot of flack from the jays and mockingbirds so maybe they decided to find a friendlier place to hang out?? Perhaps you could import some bird bullies to run the crows off.

Goldfinch are beginning to return to the feeders. Put up a squirrel proof feeder this weekend. They had it figured out in less time than it took me to hang it.
In addition to the goldfinch, we also had cardinals, painted buntings, house finch, red headed woodpeckers, blue jays, nuthatch, titmouse, and chickadees. The colors are really bright this time of year.

I was sitting under my carport taking a break from gardening and watched a Jaybird (Blue Jay ( attack our tomcat as he walked from under my boat to the carport After awhile the tomcat was laying down like it was asleep and the jaybird kept walking closer and calling in a loud voice all of the time. Well the tomcat was not asleep and leaped at the jaybird and almost caught it but the jaybird flew away and then came back bothering the tomcat but never getting so close again.
