Last week, at the new house, I had a vulture on the deck, walking around. Today, there were TWO!!! I'm talking about a deck that's 2 levels. First, they were downstairs, in the COVERED portion. Then they were upstairs, walking around on the deck. They hopped up onto the railing and were looking INSIDE!!! Weird, huh? They're not looking down into the creek area for food. When they leave, they fly into a tree close by, and if they really fly they fly away. It's so freaky to have those red, bald heads eyeballing you through the picture window. I wonder if they have a nest nearby. The house has been empty for over a year, I think, so they probably think they own the place.

Lav, I wouldn't sneak up on those birds. I know a Turkey Vulture will throw up on ya if its gets nervous. I think they can shoot it about 10 ft too. lol I'm sure the combination of stomach acid & carrion is not that pleasant. A ghost is not sounding too bad now, is it?

Thanks for the visual, there, guys! There I was, thinking they were a mating pair, or maybe that I was moving a little too slowly. And now I'm thinking vomit and carrion reeking ghosts. Nice.

Any idea what type of vulture they are? The turkey vulture is a HUGE bird with razor sharp claws and beak. But the feathers are softer than you would think. Yes, I have pet one.

Definitely turkey vultures, Cathartes aura.
Blue, there are tons of wild turkeys there, too. We have fun going out on the deck and burbling at them, because they answer (the turkeys, I mean... vultures just hiss, and apparently puke.) Gotta say, it's kind of freaky when those big vultures are staring at you.

Well, you probably won't have too many little critters hanging around outside with those guys stalking the place. I remember when I was a kid and we were on a road trip somewhere, and one of them didn't get out of the way quick enough. His ass hit our windshield HARD.

Turkey vultures habitually roost in a certain tree. That tree, after a growing season, usually dies. When it falls apart, they pick another tree. I wonder if they didn't settle on your deck when no one was living there? If so, I suspect they'll be bothered enough, by your presence, that they'll eventually move.

Yep... they'll most likely move on eventually. Right now, we haven't moved into the house yet, so they think they can just wait us out, I bet. Turkey Vultures aren't elaborate nest builders, either, often laying eggs in hollowed trees, or thickets. Both of which we have in abundance near the deck. I hope for their sake that they don't lay them down in the blackberries... I'd hate for my dogs to kill a clutch of fuzzy white baby vultures. They do have their place, after all.
This pair is oddly endearing, really. If they stick around much longer, we're definitely going to name them. I'm thinking Sid and Nancy.
