Because many people need a long lead time for out of town trips I thought I'd start posting about our conference.
The 4th annual AHSC Fall Conference will be held October 5-7, 2007. Once again it will be hosted by the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center, in Berea, Kentucky.
Highlight of these meetings are the formal seed swaps held Saturday and Sunday mornings. Last year something on the order of 180 heirloom varieties changed hands through swap, sale, and outright gift.
We have a full line-up of speakers, on topics ranging from garlic growing to seed saving methodology. And there will be tours of SMAC for those interested.
Market growers will find our special "Market Growers Round Table" of particular interest, as it provides a forum for them to discuss their specialized problems and needs.
And, of course, our every popular Saturday night cook-out and pot luck dinner will be another hit.
Nonmembers are welcome to all events and meetings with the exception of the Friday night early-bird's reception, which is confined to members and speakers. Frankly, the conversations that take place during that event are, by themselves, worth the price of joining.
And if you do join you'll save a couple of bucks, because non-member registration fees are higher.
I'll be posting specific information as time goes by. But if you have any interest in heirlooms you should make plans to attend.

Not a problem, Garnetmoth.
I'll be posting, periodically, to keep everyone up to date on the conference. So, as we get closer to it, you can make up your mind.
Plus, of course, members will receive a pre-registration form in the next newsletter, which details the discounts they get.

Ira Wallace To Address AHSC
Ira Wallace, manager of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, will be one of the speakers at the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy’s (AHSC) fourth annual Fall Conference.
Wallace, who studied at the New College Environmental Studies Institute, will discuss seed saving methodology during the conference. She is a Certified Plants Person with the Ontario Board of Horticulturists, a VCE Master Gardener instructor, and has lead workshops at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens, Ontario Herbalist Society, and other locales.
She also is the organizer of the Heritage Harvest Festival, to be held at Monticello’s Tufton Farm, on September 8, 2007.
The AHSC Fall Conference will be held October 5-7, 2007 at the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center (SMAC), in Berea, Kentucky. There will be two formal seed swaps, speakers and workshops, and tours of SMAC, in addition to numerous opportunities for one-on-one interaction among attendees and speakers.
Non-members are welcome to attend all conference events except the Friday night early bird reception, which is confined to members and invited speakers.
The Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the heirloom food plants and sustainable agricultural practices of those states in the mountain south. Membership information, and details about the conference, are available from Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy, Box 519, Richmond, KY 40476, KentuckySeeds@hotmail.com.

Brook, That's great! I look forward to spending more time with Ira in October. I was a go-between for getting some rare winter Squash grown for seed saving this year. She took on the responsibility with several of her interns to hand pollinate and grow these rare squash varieties. Looks like things are coming together for the Fall Conference. Gary

Yeah, they are, Gary. In fact, as of right now I have more possible speakers than slots for them.
Might have to curtail the market grower's round-table, or offer concurrent sessions. Soon as I have it worked out I'll be posting the full schedule.

Wow! Really excited about the new speaker and the conference in general! I hope everyone is doing well and at the conference we will have to bump the messageboard so we will all have a place to come and speak between conferences! -Alan

Notice: Anyone who may have been planning on attending the AHSC Conference. We have, reluctantly, decided to cancel it this year. Reason: Apparent lack of interest.
As of right now we have only 5 preregistrations in house. Typically, at this point, we'd have 16-19 plus a handful of other confirmed attendees. So there seemed little point to holding the conference.
Don't know if it was gas prices or other reasons. But hopefully next year will be better.

Oh man, that sucks, i'm sorry Brook, I had planned on coming down but I hadn't gotten my package in the mail yet. Maybe you could send an e-mail or snail mail to those with computer axis about this site and we can do some seed trading still this winter, maybe we could even set up a chat or something? Just some ideas.
