Well today I started Naked Ned Kelly (An Ox Raymundo F/6).
I am not growing my beloved LI Naked Seeds this year as I don't want them to cross. Maybe I'll put some in very late as Halloween Pumpkins!

Naked Ned Kelly? Aren't the rinds as hard as shovels?

Glad to hear you're growing them Holly. For some reason, mine grew so slowly they only made fruit recently and first frost is a just few short weeks away. It's already quite cool at night so I doubt the fruit will mature. I got two fruit types - an acorn shape with pale skin and an elongated shape with green and yellow markings. I'll post some pics.

Steve, I got this package from Ox, you know his labeling.... it says, Naked Seed F/6 Raymundo...we may be calling this one Ned Kelly.
So, Naked Ned Kelly?
I'm guessing this naked seed squash is "game as Ned Kelly?"
Armored shells? I dunno, Raymundo? Ox?

Sorry, slightly esoteric cultural reference there. Ned Kelly made himself a "suit of armor" at least partly, I think, from shovels. Mick Jagger starred as "Ned Kelly" in a movie, back when he and I were young; before your time, to be sure.

I thought he made his armour from plough shares

Could be; you being closer, you can probably see better than I.

My handwriting must have been worse than usual, those are F3 seed.
The fruits that ended up having true naked seeds also had this very thick hard shell. I suggested to Ray that Ned Kelly might be a cool name for them if this trait persisted. Its probably early to name something at F3, but I thought it was a cool name and honored the fact that it is an Australian-bred squash.
Ned Kelly's gang made their armor out of plowshares I believe.

Ned Kelly's gang made their armor out of plowshares I believe. Sorry Oxbow, I am going to be pedantic so please ignore this post Here in Australia we have ploughs not plows so Ned must have made his armour out of plough shares. *Shakes head at the vagaries of the English language* ;D

So you're saying those are "pluffs", "ploos", "ploes", or "plaws"?

So its not easy crossing the naked seeded with hulled varieties and getting naked seeded progeny then. I was reading about C. pepo Tatume's unusual heat/drought/borer tolerance and vigor, and I got to thinking it would be nice to have these qualities in a naked seeded kind. With enough crossing I assume its doable. I'd like to try it with Little Greenseed.

The main difficulty is having enough room to grow out enough F2's to find the fully naked seeded segregates. I grew out about 40 plants of Ray's F2 and got one plant that was naked seeded. That was a bit lower than the the predicted probability.

The F1 hulled x naked was crossed back to a naked to get that F2?

No, the F1 was selfed.
