Cavalierly carrying on. You can see the frost damage on the leaves. It is undergoing a winter test which I had thought it had failed so I was surprised to see it looking so perky after the cold snap had broken. Winter, hower, is only half way over. In its young and heady summer days, with some magenta spreen (Chenopodium giganteum).

When did you sow these OG, and where did you get the seed?

I wintersowed them in March, I think. The seed was from a member of HG. I should have some left and can spare a small amount if you would like to try them.

It is a B Oleracea Acephala, Raymondo. The leaves taste sweeter during winter, but it has a hint of mild bitterness. From all kales I have grown and eaten, this is not exacly a tasty type, but since it survived our cold winter, attractive looking and less troubled by cabbage root fly, I will continue to grow some. Mine grow a bit over 1 meter, some of them are lying on their side due to heavy snow cover.

No Raymondo, it is ''le chou cavalier'' that you probably saw while living in France. it is a perennial, I have some in the garden, I'll see if they stood the winter once the snow is gone...

Telsing, the younger one (around 1') seems to managed cold winter much better then those grown over 1 meter tall.

Thanks hiven and Michel.
I saw bunches of kale in the late winter/early spring markets in Lyon, where I spent most of my time, but not in Aix-en-Provence. I can't remember now what they looked like, damn lousy memory. I never bought any because they always had plenty of cabbages which were so much sweeter at that time of year.

Hiven: I noticed the same thing. I think because it was better protected from winter weather by its height. This would follow with all my brassicas - short kales do better here.

Ray, in France it is most often see in the north, Pas de Calais,Brittany and Normandy , where a lot of french cabbages were created, proximity of England I suppose....
It is not to say we do not see them elsewhere, gardeners being traders and all, but southern France can grow cabbages 12 months a year, and not necessarily of the most cold resistant types...

I really enjoyed this kale the last year. Beautiful purple leaves and mild tender greens even late into flowering. I did a growout of seed on this and just finished processing from 21 plants. I found fairly good regeneration after flowering, so I would say it is probably going to limp on another season if I hadn't pulled them. Interestingly, one plant is growing without having flowered at all, but I think this may have to do with that plant having trouble overcoming being root bound. I will have to say that the perenniality is nowhere near that of the Purple Tree Collards x Daubenton grex I've been working with. I'll post some pictures of that soon.
From the plants, I've got about a 1/2pound of seed to share to whoever wants some. If you are interested just PM me and I will send you some seed. I would love to try any varieties you may have that might do well in the Pacific North West.
