Anyone live near or in Waterdown, Ontario?
I have a mission for a willing volunteer and a big favor to ask. hehehe
Hortico plant nursery. They have something I want, but I hear terrible reviews about their mail order side, but decent reviews of pick-up orders.
Thanks!

Ceara, Where are you hearing bad news about their mail order?
They were in business when I lived in that area in the 1970's. I don't think they would have survived had they been poor at shipping?

On the Dave's Garden website, under "scoop on Hortico" or something similar. Lots of negative reviews on mail order roses.
But I don't want a rose. I want one of their perennials listed but not sure about ordering after reading all the reviews. They are the only place in Canada that has something listed for sale that I want and cannot find anywhere else. The USA websites that sell the same thing will not sell to Canada whatsoever.
I emailed them almost a week ago asking about a definition of S & R codes they have on their website, in some of the plant descriptions. No answer.

There are also 48 Positives on Dave's Garden. And some of the Negative responses had good experiences with Hortico generally speaking yet chose to focus on one little item in their shipment that wasn't to their liking. In most cases, the item was refunded or replaced.
Ceara, have you tried phoning Hortico to ask? Perhaps, like many greenhouse businesses, they close for vacation in the dead of winter. Many of the ones near me here in Niagara are closed until March. Seedhouses are different than plant businesses because seeds need to be started this time of year. But businesses that sell plants don't usually ship when it's 20F outside. I'd suggest phoning to see if that is the case.

If I phone I will just get an answering machine as indicated on their website. Just as there is no guarantee of getting an email reply, there is no guarantee of getting a telephone reply. GardenWeb site forums also say negative things about that company. There may have been good reviews in the past, but none regarding perennials, only roses.
I fully realise that nurseries won't ship now. I'm not asking them to ship now - that would be stupid and I am smarter than that. I just want to know the definition of the codes on the plant description. And I looked all over their website. Took me a few hours the other night until 2 am.
So I was hoping someone on this forum who lived close to their facility to go there in person and check out the plant I want. It's very rare and no other place in Canada sells this item, and the retailers in the USA refuse to ship it to Canada.

Could you tell us what it is you were wanting to order? Maybe someone has it and could risk sending it to you.

Wild Leeks, in a pot. (I think - which is why I wanted to know the codes of S & R because S code is listed under the wild leek description.) I just found out earlier today that the leeks are sold in several farmers markets in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2009/04/whats_fresh_toronto_ramps/I just found where someone bragged they found leeks growing wild. St.Joseph Island, 45 K's from Sault Ste. Marie. Soooo, who's going picking to send me some so I can replant on our land? I'll pay for postage, or take it COD via Canada Post or on the bus system. The bus can sometimes be faster! And they will call me when it arrives so I can go pick it up. April would be best time I think. Anyone in Quebec is allowed 50 plants legally in possession, as long as they didn't come from an official park in Quebec.

I'm swimming in wild leeks. St joes is the next Island over from me.
I work in a group home situated on an old farm. One fo the resident ladies favourite tasks is to go and gather wild leeks in the spring to add to our meals. She' so into it, that we cant get her to stop.
Wait until a good thaw or springs arrival and I'll send you all the leeks you'd ever want.

Yay!
I can wait until the time is right for the leeks. *grin*
You are lucky to be swimming in it though.
