Hi all,
I'm looking for vegetables that were grown in Slovenia in the 1940's. My neighbor's mother had to flee Slovenia when she was 9 in 1940/41. Seems that an uncle of hers had joined the 'wrong' militia and the 'right' militia was coming to kill the her whole family.
Any way, she is moving in with her daughter next year and I'd like to grow some vegetables that she had as a young girl. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Pugs

I think perhaps (Iva) is your best bet, as she is from Slovenia, and must have first hand knowledge of the best places to try for some.

Thanks Michael, I'll be checking with her. There is at least one other Slovenian who posts here, Marjeta (sp?). I'm hoping there might be a few others.

Zivijo! Pugs, I would like to talk more with you. We are just an hour south of Salem and I have been contemplating starting up a Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Slovenian-American Society (in part because I am teaching myself the language and it's hard as no one around here is a native speaker). And while this might not be seeds, Salem has a lovely little European Market that your neighbor's mother might enjoy. I came across this post because I have just recently begun to look into heirloom vegetable varieties from Slovenian (and the rest of the Alpe-Adria Bioregion). My family and I will be traveling there for the first time this fall and plan on visiting gardens, organic farms, permaculture sites, collecting seeds, etc. There is one squash I know of called a 'Yugoslavian Finger Fruit' that dates back to 1885! www.reimerseeds.com/yugoslavian-finger-fruit-squash.aspx Iva, What part of Slovenia are you in? We will be Splitting our time between Koper and Ljubljana, but have plans to travel just about everywhere. If there is any special place you can recommend we visit, I'd love to hear about it. Lastly, we just started a site about our attempts to cook traditional Slovenian food using mostly fresh local, organic ingredients. If yall are interested: savoringslovenia.wordpress.com/Adijo, Roman

I have fresh seed of a Slovenian climbing bean (ph vulgaris) called 'Slovenian Yellow' for want of the original name. This is a yellow podded bean with olive green seeds. Later in the year an apricot hue overlays the yellow pods (with faint striping). We eat the pods as 'green' beans. They are very pretty and productive.
My donor is Dutch and he got them directly from Slovenia. They do well in The Netherlands, England and have been swapped with a friend in Colorado too. In Colorado they needed to adjust for a year and started to perform well the second time they were grown (first time from colorado produced seeds).
PM me if you are interested in seeds.
