Just wondering if anyone has had success growing okra in a northern climate? I've become interested in the possibility after our success growing peanuts and sweet potatoes here in Nova Scotia, okra's another heat lover that I'd love to try. This year I'll have a big poly-tunnel to grow in for the first time too.

I do believe I can help you with some peanuts! We don't have a lot of seed. Most are saved from our crop last year. I also have a very few of 2 varieties from our national seed repository. I can send you more of "our" seed, and I'll be happy to share what I have from the repository as well. Send me a message with your mailing data.

Michel: I know OSC sells Valencia but I'd love to hear about other short season varieties.
I tried okra but not seriously. I bet that it would love the same treatment you are giving your Sweets. Looking forward to hearing more.

Annie Oakley is the standard short season varietie. It has not been productive here though...OKRA is not easy for us if you want a real crop. You need a lot of garden space for not much food.

If you knew which accessions you wanted, I could request them then pass them on to you? All of mine are long season I'm afraid.

I think I'll just go for it with okra and report back here with the results! Last year I grew my peanuts and sweet potatoes in the field with no plastic or coddling or anything, and they still did okay despite the miserable summer. In fact here's my blog post on them! annapolisseeds.blogspot.com/2009/09/peanuts-and-sweetpotatoes.html And of course Michel I'd be happy to send a bag of peanuts your way! My seed was just the common valencia from OSC. I recently met a farmer nearby who grows more varieties of peanuts in her greenhouse, I'll definitely try to expand my collection (which is difficult when you can't bring peanuts across the border).

Michel, is it possible that the government of Ontario actually is concerned about something agricultural? That being the crops in the Southwestern sector of the province where Peanuts and Ginseng were introduced to save the farms of former tobacco growers? I'd bet a Big Bag of Ballpark Peanuts that's what the permit is about.
