This is just something I have been thinking about lately as my favourite way of dealing with pests is by excluding them. When it comes to saving space, however, tall can be better, but when I'm trying to keep out EVERYTHING, or at least most things, then my fantasies turn to chickenwire cages with teeny tiny openings.
Some dwarves that I've considered are:
corn (Michel, I'm pretty sure you mentioned caging these or was that my imagination?) sunflower
Anyone do this? It would be a pain on a large scale but makes sense in my mind for large seeded 'grains' or high yielding in a small area that are attacked by members of the mammal and bird family. I have problems with sunflowers...

I'm thinking that if you needed large amounts of plants protected, maybe a greenhouse frame covered over with chicken wire might be doable.

That's a cool idea Karen.
