Are some cowpea (and yard long) varieties day length sensitive? Over the last couple of years I've grown a number of varieties, mostly but not exclusively pole types, that haven't matured. I have the impression that they grow well but don't start to flower till we approach the autumnal equinox. It's only an impression. I may be mistaken. Perhaps I just lucked out and grew late season varieties.
