Bear in mind though that some 60% of Alliums even in botanical gardens are wrongly identified!!

Barbara, the curator, told me something about this, although not using these precise figures. Some of my order was replaced by other accessions because she was convinced of wrog ID...sure hope I get a better average than that! LOL

I don't mind allium ''sp'' too much if it means ''SPecial in the mouth''

Yes, I'm sure you'll get better than 60%. I mean, all the Allium sp. will be absolutely correct as I suspect will the Allium cepas and Allium fistulosums. More doubtful about Allium altaicum, but they are difficult to separate from fistulosum anyway, and certainly tastewise...

Some of them should of course be bulbils and not seed(such as scorodoprasum and longicuspis). There was at least one seed accession of Allium x proliferum (walking onions) in the Norwegian Gene Bank (this never produces seed).

It was Allium expert Dr. Fritsch at Gatersleben who gave me the statistic and I've seen many wrong ones in botanical gardens over the last few years, so I think he could be right.

Alliums are difficult and there are few experts, so mistakes get passed on from garden to garden...

Plus there is the fact that not all experts are in agreement as to exactly how many allium species there really are...some get bounced back and forth between being species in their own right and relegated to subspecies or variety status.

Now I thought I was doing something fun with 20 or so A. cepa and a few others (some fistulosum, oschaninii and schoenoprasum)...for a total of about 35. You've more than tripled what I'm doing.

Well my much more modest allium starts are all becoming respectable little seedlings but 3 packs which I'm giving some more stratification too. I even had germination from some seed that was more than 2 years old. I don't know why this surprises me. Gernally I find that well kept seed will start even after its expiration date at least in small percents.

I have a few ( 30% or so) bad germinating cultivars, only a few no nos, but some are amazingly productive..I guess age comes into mind...poor old seeds

I did not have time to take notes, and it is too early anyway in a sense, I was planting loads of greens and weird stuff from people like Frank

I just paid a visit to the greenhouse where they were growing, but I have so much stuff on the go, in this planting/seeding time, not one minute is available for true report. It will come later...
