Most of you probably know that I'm farm hunting this year and boy have I seen my share of acreages... not so many farms, lots of land though. There is only one contender at the moment which is on a western slope with slighlty acidic (I think, haven't done a pH test) soil. I've seen swamps, poison ivy pits (did have a nice hen house), acres of rock outcrop (they didn't mention that when they said it was mostly cleared , and deeep ravines. This week includes one forest, and a couple bonafide farms. I'm excited!

Ottawa, Hope you find what you are looking for, sounds like you have been adding up the mileage with all the prospects. We just purchased an additiional 5 acres that boarders our property. Just out of curiosity what will farm land go for in your area of Canada. Here in our area it can go anywhere from 3,000.00 to 10,000.00 per acre. We were in the middle area at 6,000.00 . Also curious about your tax system there, on 9 acres of farm ground we paid $12.54 last year. Now that we have built a house on it our taxes will be $2,950.00 .

Sounds nice Steve.
Michel, I certainly hope you are helping me but I don't want to waste your time looking at acres of rock do I? I just want you see the good properties. We are still looking at that log cabin one but I"m waiting until the weather is a bit warmer for another look. Besides, it's still too expensive.
I'm not sure how much land goes per acre around here. We're buying a farm+house so it seems to vary a lot, even the land varies a lot. Right now to get around 10-50 acres with a house, it's anywhere from 200,000 (something's wrong!) to 400,000 dollars, or more.

Are you dead-set on being a Candian? ;D We could find you a heck of a little place around here for $200,000. I went to a clients house yesterday, they had a log cabin in the woods kind of thing going on. Made me really, really, really want to find our little place in the country. It's going to be a log cabin for me, or nothing. Good luck in your search, I know it can be tough to find that perfect spot.

Heck, $200,000 can get some really good places here in WV...with free gas, well water and more than 40 acres...and a livable house.

Yeah, for some reason, the area around here is not cheap. :/

I am jealous. Land around here is $10,000/acre for marginal ground. The good ground isn't for sale. Good luck with your search. Jonny

Really Mike? That's interesting. We've been on the look out for something as well. We've focused more on western NC and Tennessee, but mainly because we don't know that much about other states.
Can you recommend a couple of good websites that would give me an idea of what's available in your state and what it would look like? We are looking for a lot more than 40 acres.

Yeah, for some reason, the area around here is not cheap. :/ Holy cow Telsing.....dont come farm shopping in my neck of the woods ........here farms start at around 400 thousand and can hit the 2 million dollar mark , for just a standard farm........but then again, we are on the Niagara Escarpment and on Georgian Bay, so its a huge tourist area, all year round. There is a "farm" about 15 minutes down the road from me, with 1550 acres, a HUGE(and i mean HUGE,78acre) pond, and 6 workers house(2000sq feet each), a working cattle farm plus the main house(6000sq feet), for a cool 16.5 million, it was at 26 million, but they`ve had to drop it

Hey Penny, that could be the new Homegrown Goodness town. We could all move there and farm 'trout' and so on. If everyone just put in a few (million) dollars...
