We had an exceptionally mild winter so I'm not drawing any conclusions yet though this technique might work great in areas where our last winter was the rule rather than the exception. Anyhow, I'm going to try this again next year and maybe someone else does it. I left some plastic, open ended, low tunnels over some brassicas this year mostly as a way of keeping the early snows off but later to prevent severe squashing. This seemed to improve the appearance and lack of kill of the tops of some of brassicas. However, I also got good survival this year on the uncovered stuff. Cina Choy looking like its going to produce lovely seeds for me this year. I mostly thought it was useful for things like perennial walking kales. Comparably the ones left just with snow cover looked poorer. It could also have been a function of the microclimate affect or a combination. It seemed better than merely a cleaned off coldframe in that there was more insulation.
