I love this club but was wondering if there were other online clubs that deal more with flowers rather than veggies? It sure would be nice to find one that has members in my own area of southern In, or Louisville Ky. Anyone know of any? Thanks

Thanks everyone! I tried Gardenweb and found some really interesting stuff in there beside flowers, wow! I will look at the other suggested site too. I have already connected with Karen who is one of the nicest person anyone would want to know. She lives only 30 miles from me. Nice to get a face to the names. Can't wait to check out the other sites too.

Check out the Master Gardeners too. I think the group in your area calls themselves 'Sunnyside MG's'. There are a lot of aspects of the MG's that I don't like, first being the fact that the 'Master' part is pretty far from reality. But, there are some knowledgeable folks in there too. Roy Ballard is a big part of that group, and he is a good guy. Those groups tend to take tours that you wouldn't be able to go on as an individual, and I have considered biting the bullet, and my tongue, to go ahead and take the class just to be able to go on their activities.

What does it cost to take a MG course in the U.S.?? There is going to be one in this area soon. I found out last night that the cost is $250.00. Won't be taking that course any time soon.

I think it is in the $200 area here. The MG's in this area are a joke. Well intentioned, I'm sure, but a joke nevertheless. There is one lady who retired to this county and she has a little garden shop. She doesn't grow anything, but buys from a nursery where she used to live. She is a MG. I stopped by there the other day, we were chatting and she was talking about spraying this for bugs and spraying that for weeds. I said I preferred not to use sprays, she says how do you keep the weeds out? ?? Duh. Funny thing is, she was going to go pick her husband up from the hospital later that day. He was also in the hospital last year about the same time, with lung trouble. I guess it never occurs to them that spraying all those chemicals could have something to do with his breathing troubles. I'm not saying that that is what causes his problems, but it is amazing to me how many people think nothing of spraying everything into oblivion. I did mention to her that if stuff kills bugs, that includes the butterflies.....sorry, didn't mean to get off on a rant.

To continue with the rant. They have officially banned pesticides and herbicides for public use in the city. This means that I can now close ant refugee camp. Actually, I never opened it but the ants live on mass in my yard where they are unmolested by chemicals and enjoy the sandy soil. I am always topdressing with organic matter to improve the soil, which they happily till in for me... Last year I noticed more mounds not on my property! Sharing is good.

Here's the Gov't of Ontario Legislation Ban on Pesticides (Herbicides and Fungicides) which actually overrides Municipal bans such as Niagara (which was the first municipality in the Province to legislate against Chemical use), Ottawa, etc..
Geez, Karen, I was under the impression that MG courses in the U.S. were funded by Ag Extension. What a surprise that your fees are almost as much as ours. Guess you won't be attending any time soon either.
And what doesn't surprise me is to hear of people simply purchasing plants (or seeds) for resale and passing them off as their own. One large Seedy Saturday sale this year that a friend participates in was rife with new members doing exactly that. This disturbs me as this tells me that these people are only in this for the $$. They don't actually have any interest in gardening nor any ability to raise their own plants/seeds I guess.

In the adjoining county where I had my MG training in 2001, this spring's class was $200 after a $25 price drop. The Extension offices are having budget woes.

I hear ya. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food used to have regional offices that held seminars for farmers on a variety of topics. I attended classes on husbandry for cattle as well as Pumpkin growing for market, just to name a few. They had brochures on a variety of topics and even office stationery for keeping books. By the mid-90's it was no more.
