I have baby seedlings of Deveci pear for the first time this year. I planted these in pots in January 2009 and they didn't come up in 2009. I decided to leave them alone all last year, except for an occasional watering, and see if they might surface this year and they did.
Deveci pear is one of the largest, if not the largest, pears in the world. It is also supposed to be pretty tasty. It is grown commercially in Turkey. It is a low chill, late season pear that would probably do best in zones 7-9 in the US. I can't find wood in the US so I obtained seed from a Turkish guy here in the US with friends in Turkey. It will be interesting to see how the seedlings turn out.
The Turkish melon guy on ebay now has seeds of Deveci pear also.

Cool! I had to order some and that large watermelon too. I grew Kirkagac melon and Honey pumpkin last year from him and they were both fun to grow. This year I planted about 30 seeds of fragrant pear that I got here www.melissas.com/Products/Products/Fragrant-Pear.aspx. A single seed sprouted. Hopefully I do not kill it and can do some grafting from it.

How did the Kirkagac melon taste?

I did not get a really good evaluation of the Kirkagac last year but the one small under-ripe melon that I did try tasted pretty good to me. I was growing in it in my small community plot (zone 5) with cold clay soils and only had two melons. The larger of the two melons got eaten by something. This year I will try several of the Anatoilan melons in my new garden with deep sandy loam soils (zone 6b "banana belt"). Also, I have not yet seen a vole here yet. The voles hollowed out several melons last year in the community plot but I think they ate the whole Kirkagac skin and all.

Voles hollowed out my only Orangeglo watermelon last year. It looked like it was in perfect shape until you looked at the end where they got in.

I love Pears, but sadly I just don't have room for them, although if my Plum tree which has something going on at its base dies I will desidedly get a pear. I don't have the grafting down just yet and I have no idea if I could graft a cutting of a pear to a apple tree and have it take properly. I think it might though, I would almost be afraid to graft such a large pear type to one of my small dwarf apple tree, although it might not cause problems on a simi dwarf type. George W.
