Just got an email from Ellen at Seneca Hill Perennials. She has to close her nursery as her husband is in bad health. While I will hate to lose this wonderful source of plants, I understand her need to do it. Hers is a very special kind of place, with plants you can't get just anywhere. The kind of place where you couldn't just hire any old body to come in and take over for you. Ellen once sent me a rush order of Dictamnus because the caterpillars of the giant swallowtail had eaten the plant I had and I was afriad they would run out of food. She got them to me in time. Big nurseries wouldn't have given a rats ass about the butterflies to be. There have been so many nurseries closing in the last couple of years, many because of the economy, but others due to circumstances of the owners. So to all of you out there who have a nursery, or are thinking about starting a company-think about succession planning! If you are breeding, pass along your knowledge to someone who can carry on your work. We plant junkies need our fixes. Not fair to pull the supplies once we are hooked.

Don't know much about the local small nurseries around here. Just getting back into gardening, starting some raised beds in back yard. Need to get ahold of Alan for some worms and garden plants, and maybe a tour of his farm.
