I was given a pair of Serama Chickens recently. I did some hauling of birds and eggs for a friend and he gifted me with some of his serama chicks. I have them in the sunroom and since they are way too tiny to join either the bantam or bigbird flock, it looks like they will be permanent house guests. They are very tame and their twiddling sounds quite a bit like a songbird so they are pleasant company. They are too small to make a big mess and they are sweet little things, happy to nestle into the palm of your hand. I guess I've crossed the line into Crazy Chicken Lady territory by keeping poultry in the house, but I know that was eventually my destiny anyways. I'm not sure yet how they fit into the homesteading plan of action but as pets they are kinda fun. Attachments:

Heck...they're smaller than a lot of parrots/cockatiels and such. Interesting 'breed'...it seems that it hasn't quite been 'stabilized' yet, with the same pair throwing many different color combinations and sizes. If there are any chickens that would qualify as a 'house pet' this breed fits the bill...err...beak...ummm...yeah, whatever, you know what I mean .

I know that Flowerpower loves her Seramas. Sounds like you've already fallen hard for your new family members too, Jo. Enjoy!

Now THAT is a chicken! I don't think you'll cross the "crazy chicken lady" line unless you let them eat off your dinner plate and make them a morning cappuccino! ;o)

I have a large parrot cage that we used to keep Polish Bantams in the house after being bathed for a show. I wanted to bring a pair with us and keep them in our front porch as cage birds after selling the farm, but I was outvoted.

Dirt, that's a cute baby. I do keep the Seramas in the house most of the yr. It has to be at least 70 F for them to be outside. I do put them in a big dog run during the day. The top is covered so nothing can get in and they can't get out. They could easily fly out if they wanted to. Seramas only grow to about 1 lb. They are about the size of a pigeon. They can have any color or feather pattern. Some are one color, some are every color. They have over 1000 different color/pattern variations. I got to choose form over 20 birds. No two looked alike. They should have big breasts and the wings should hang almost straight down. Mine are almost a yr old now. They are very sweet. Though the roo is not that cute when he is crowing at 5 am. Here's a few pics of Napoleon & Josephine.

Does he crow as much outside as he does indoors? Prolly doesn't sound as deafening either does it?

Our roosters are JUST starting to crow! Mike is under the impression that because they are crowing, we should be seeing eggs soon?

No matter how much the roos crow, they won't be laying eggs. Hens don't lay eggs until they are 20 weeks old. Start giving them layer pellets at 16 weeks.
