Including annuals with perennials, 'useful' plants with edible and the like.
The one I want to try is onion with carrot and cosmos.
Any favourites people have?

My absolutely favourite is your standard beans and corn. I did a test last year and grew some beans up some corn stalks but left others without a bean companion. There was a noticeable difference between the two, the stalks without any beans running up them were quite a bit shorter and only produced one ear each, while the stalks that had beans with them were minimum of 2ft higher and produced 2 ears each (one of them even produced 3!).

my most favorite is radishes and carrots and snapdragons!
one year we planted cukes and corn together, with marigolds on the side. the cukes were Armenian and did wonderfully! the corn produced very well too.
tomatoes and lettuces and nasturtiums have done well also.

That sounds lovely Ian and raspberries would definitely cover up fading bulbs.

Tall peas and achocha/korila works well together, since peas are quick to grow up the trellis, whereas achocha will take over when peas have finished producing. The one feed the other, and both feed me :-)

That's a nice one Toad. I've tried peas and cukes but found the peas were still going strong and the cukes didn't appreciate it or maybe it was wilt? Anyhow, I'd be interested in trying this polyculture.
I"m creating an unintentional polyculture with amaranth, basil and calendula because they are all growing together overly crowded in a seed starter tray. I plan on just planting them out in blocks.

Row of pole beans running east/west along north bed edge, potatoes on south side in the same bed, garlic or onions in the bed just behind. By the time the pole beans are big enough to cast shade on the alliums, the alliums are ready to be pulled, and fall greens are planted in the bed where the alliums were. The fall greens appreciate the shade from the pole beans in August. Also, I sow parsley in the garlic beds either in the spring or when the garlic is planted (fall). The parsley is so slow to start, it doesn't get big enough to bother the garlic.

Slow germinating seeds with radishes.... The radishes come up early and mark the row so I can weed even before the other seeds have sprouted.
Or for that matter a few radish seeds in any row.
