That is quite interesting if it's something permanent. Last year on one of my Aloysia triphylla (A. citrodora) i saw few branches with 4 instead of 3 leaves on each node, so I thought this could be a bud mutation (A. triphylla 'tetraphylla' ), but alas, it was not. When I rooted few cuttings of these branches, they grew new branches with 3 leaves. Obviously in my case it was modification instead of mutation. Lets hope in your case it's mutation. Keep us informed.

My Yacon is sluggish. It's just a rooted cutting; it does have roots but isn't growing much in earnest, with just a few weak buds going. I put it in a self-watering pot to keep it evenly moist while waiting for it to get established. They are reputedly about as root-hardy as Dahlias but I don't want to risk my one and only plant, so I'm going to keep it in a pot and next autumn put the pot someplace cool but frost-free once the top dies back. Hristo, it hit -8C last November here, and the freeze lasted a whole week. As a result, my Aloysia has yet to be seen this year, having frozen back to at least the ground. I don't know if it will sucker from the base, but they often do. It is reputedly the best citrus-scented plant, being rich in geraniol and having a nice mix of different citrus-scented components. I often use the leaves, liquified in a high-speed blender, to enhance the flavor of lemonade. Or, when I am out of lemons, I have been known to liquify the leaves with stevia leaves to make mock lemonade. Stevias are even more tender than Lemon Verbenas.

Side shoots have reverted to two leaves. I have no idea what that means!

Obviously your case is as mine. This means that these 3 instead of 2 leaves per node are something temporary and will not be inherited. This is called modification and for example could be caused by external factors. In other words - forget about it. You can not do anything.
